If the beautiful children at the Jusarang Orphanage are the "stars" of The Drop Box, then Pastor Lee Jong-rak is the "director," overseeing the entire enterprise with a guiding hand of love and compassion. But he simply cannot do it alone. Throughout the film, often in the background, we see other individuals who are standing alongside Pastor Lee in his life-saving work.
Who are they? They are volunteers, a loving community of fellow believers who have made a commitment to serve alongside Pastor Lee. Not only do they assist in caring for the children, they also oversee the many day-to-day tasks and responsibilities that accompany such an enterprise.
Most of us have probably seen this type of community in action when a new baby is born, or when an accident or illness disrupts someones life, or when there is a death in someones family. For a period of time after the event, friends step in to help take care of the day-to-day challenges. Adoptive families need that same kind of support, but often for more than just that first week.
Acts of service are simply meant to free up time for an adoptive family, allowing them to focus on the needs of their kids. For example, if mom is constantly in the car running errands, going to the grocery store, and so on, she doesnt have time to sufficiently connect and interact with the new child in the family. Acts of service, then, are not times when we spend time with the family and their new addition. Rather, they are opportunities for us to cover some of the day-to-day "busywork" so that the family will have time to bond and connect in deep and meaningful ways.
What are you good at and what do you love doing? If its cooking or baking, make an extra meal a week to deliver to an adoptive family. If you love yard work or shopping, offer to assist in that way. Strive to be invisible in your service?leave the family to the important task of connecting with their kids while you help with other tasks.
You can also make a tangible difference when it comes to the larger issue of orphan care on a global scale. A contribution to the Global Orphan Care Fund goes to support Pastor Lees ongoing ministry in Seoul as well as Focus on the Familys Adoption and Orphan Care Initiative™!
